Richmond, VA — Virginia Speaker of the House Eileen Filler-Corn released the following statement Wednesday regarding the removal of the statue of Robert E. Lee from Monument Avenue in Richmond:
“The removal of the monument to Robert E. Lee is a step toward a more inclusive, forward-looking Virginia. We have made much progress here in Virginia honoring our diversity and working to create a more just and equitable Commonwealth. With the removal of the Lee statue, Virginia will more appropriately reflect those values and ideals. I am proud of the role the General Assembly played in this process and want to thank Governor Northam for his leadership. I would also like to thank all those who fought for this moment by ensuring their voices were heard.”
